Church Displays Stone Ten Commandments
ALLEGAN, MI (October 10) - Christ Community Church has had the Ten
Commandments and the "Jesus Creed" engraved into a
large field stone that can be seen by motorists as they drive past on
the outskirts of the community. The stone was
dedicated on October 2.
"It is the hope of Christ Community that the engraved stone might act
as both a reminder of the daily work of our awesome
God, but also used as a teaching device for young and old," says Pastor
G. Patrick White.
In his book The Jesus Creed, Scot McKnight, who serves as the Karl A.
Olsson Professor of Religious Studies at North Park
University, refers to Mark 12:29-31 as the Jesus Creed. ("Hear O
Israel, the Lord your God is one. Love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength
and with all your mind; and the second is this:
Love your neighbor as yourself." NIV).
White says he wants people to read the commands so they "might take
them to heart and become living monuments of the Ten
Commandments," adding, "it is not our desire that people will
substitute inscriptions and monuments for that which is to be
writ large in people."
Recent Supreme Court rulings on the display of the commandments in
public buildings prompted White to suggest that they
be displayed on the church property. Within days, money was pledged for
the monument. White believes such displays are
appropriate, noting that the Bible speaks of building monuments, such
as the 12 stones at the crossing of the Jordan River
as reminders of what God had done in the people's lives.
Children of Israel Display Stone Ten Commandments
- Deuteronomy 27 King James Version (KJV)
1 And Moses with the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying,
Keep all the commandments which I command you this day.
2 And it shall be on the day when ye shall pass over Jordan unto the
land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt set thee up
great stones, and plaister them with plaister:
3 And thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law,
when thou art passed over, that thou mayest go in unto the land which the
LORD thy God giveth thee, a land that floweth with milk and honey; as
the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee.
4 Therefore it shall be when ye be gone over Jordan, that ye shall set
up these stones, which I command you this day, in mount Ebal, and thou
shalt plaister them with plaister.
5 And there shalt thou build an altar unto the LORD thy God, an altar
of stones: thou shalt not lift up any iron tool upon them.
6 Thou shalt build the altar of the LORD thy God of whole stones: and
thou shalt offer burnt offerings thereon unto the LORD thy God:
7 And thou shalt offer peace offerings, and shalt eat there, and
rejoice before the LORD thy God.
8 And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law
9 And Moses and the priests the Levites spake unto all Israel, saying,
Take heed, and hearken, O Israel; this day thou art become the people
of the LORD thy God.
10 Thou shalt therefore obey the voice of the LORD thy God, and do his
commandments and his statutes, which I command thee this day.
26 Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do
them. And all the people shall say, Amen.

Will the Commandments apply for ever, or Old Testament time only?
7 The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure.
8 They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.
9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

15 One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and also for the stranger that sojourneth with you, an ordinance for ever in your generations: as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the LORD.

Ten Commandments of God
Ten Commandments of God
If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them;
Summary of the Ten Commandments
And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments,
so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant:
And if ye have erred, and not observed all these commandments, which the LORD hath spoken unto Moses,
And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them ; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:
That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God.
God Promises he will not break his Covenant of Commandments
31 If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;
32 Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.
33 Nevertheless my loving kindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.
34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
Jesus Teaching about the Stone 10 Commandments
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

The colony's original Charter of Freedoms and Exemptions, June 1, 1629, stated:
"Patroons and colonists shall in particular, and in the speediest manner, endeavor
to find out ways and means whereby they may support a Minister and Schoolmaster,
that thus the service of God and zeal for religion may not grow cool and be
neglected among them, and they shall, for the first, procure a Comforter of the
In 1665, the Colonial Legislature of New York stated:
"Whereas, The public worship of God is much discredited for want of...able
ministers to instruct the people in the true religion, it is ordered that a church
shall be built in each parish capable of holding 200 persons;
that ministers of every church shall preach every Sunday, and pray for the king,
queen, the Duke of York, and the royal family...Sunday is not to be profaned."
28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water.
And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
3 The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.
9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone,
even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water:
